limit on twitter username
You’ve heard about Twitter and now you ask, ‘What is important about my Twitter profile? Just how do I set it up?’
The answer is, there are really no hard fast rules for Twitter. You’ll hear many conflicting opinions.
I’m going to share with you my personal biased opinions from my experience with Twitter. I suggest that you view my suggestions much like a buffet. Pick what appeals to you and by-pass the rest.
Why Your Twitter Profile is Important
The quality of your Twitter experience will be largely be determined by the quality of people that choose to follow you. When evaluating whether to follow someone, people will look at your entire profile.
My Recommendations For Your Twitter Username Are:
Use the name that you go by. An example would be WilmaWoodson, with no spaces between your 1st and last name. Think of Twitter as a cocktail party, where you do not know most of the people. You would introduce yourself by your name, not some fictitious name.
Do not include either _ or – in your username. The reason is that people will not be able to text message you.
If your name is already taken, a 2nd choice is a variation of your name such as WilmaW or WWoodson.
It is a good idea to keep your Twitter username as short as possible. The reason is that you will want your messages (called Tweets) to be forwarded (called Retweet or RT) by others. A Tweet is limited to 140 characters and when someone Retweets your Tweet, your username will take up some of the 140 characters.
It is desirable to have a common username for as many of the other Social Networks as possible. When people see the same username, they automatically recognize you as the same person. My favorite Social Networks are Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and my blog. It’s smart to reserve your same username for each of them before someone else does. You can always go back later and finish setting them up.
While you are thinking about a common username among Social Networks, you might as well reserve an email address with the same username. I like Gmail.
